What to do in scorching weather

Garden shade ideas

Last summer, many plants – mine included – had their leaves and growing tips scorched in the extreme heat (over 40 deg C with hot winds).

To combat the effects of scorching weather, we’ve constructed some simple frames using recycled timber or bamboo and shade-cloth that we can put over tender plants to protect them from these conditions. Screens should be placed to receive morning sun but shade plants from the hot afternoon sun. The a-frame allows the legs to be placed closer together or further apart to create more or less shade. You may need tent pegs in windy conditions.

Use bamboo stakes to create a teepee and weave plant material, hedge prunings through two out of three sides. Place these over young trees and other tender plants with the open side facing west. These can be moved around the garden as needed.
